Border Crossing Rules for HOS
When a truck driver cross border from Canada to US or from US to Canada hours of Service Rules become applicable depending upon when and where driver has crossed the border. If Driver cross border from Canada to US, It is mandatory for the Commercial vehicle Driver to follow rules of US. Same is the case when Driver cross border from US to Canada he/she must have to follow rules of Canada. An adverse condition rule also remains the same.
From US to Canada
Drivers must have a daily logbook indicating driver on duty hours, off duty hours etc. When a commercial vehicle driver is driving in US he/she must have to follow US rules and regulations for driver HOS but when he/she entered in the Canada they have to follow Canadian HOS rules. Border crossing rules from US to Canada are summarizes below:
- In US a driver can not drive 11 hours after 10 consecutive hour’s off-duty but when he/she enters in Canada he can extend his driving upto 13 hours of driving time or 14 hours of on-duty time.
- In US driver can not drive after 60/70 hours on duty for 7/8 consecutive days but when he/she enters in Canada he must have to follow Canada HOS rule which states that he can not drive after accumulating 70/120 hours in 7/14 consecutive days.

From Canada to US
When a commercial vehicle driver is driving in Canada he/she must have to follow Canadian rules and regulations for driver HOS but when he/she entered in the US they have to follow US HOS rules. Border crossing rules from Canada to US are summarizes below:
- A driver can not drive after accumulating 13 hours of driving time or 14 hours of on-duty time which are regular daily rules for Hours of Service Canada. Those Drivers who have already accumulated this maximum driving time/on duty time can not drive in US.
- Driver can not drive after accumulating 70/120 hours in 7/14 consecutive days because he is now in US and he must have to follow US rules and regulations for HOS which is a driver should not drive after 60/70 hours on duty for 7/8 consecutive days
